ACCESS TO CLEAN WATER

Background

Current state of water quality and it's access at the Union Council level in Pakistan

01

Access to safe drinking water is an emerging issue in Pakistan, both in urban and rural settlements. In urban areas, the issue is mainly due to the growth of the population, vehicular and industrial emissions, and agricultural activities that are polluting the water resources. The cities face the problem of water contamination due to improper disposal of wastewater and industrial effluents that seep into the water resources. This problem is further compounded by the lack of adequate public infrastructure for water treatment and supply.

02

In rural areas, the access to safe drinking water is limited due to lack of infrastructure and the widespread use of contaminated water sources for drinking and irrigation. The availability of clean drinking water is limited, and the water quality is often poor, which leads to a high incidence of waterborne diseases.

03

The surface and ground water resources are being polluted due to discharge of untreated industrial and domestic wastewater, agricultural run-off, and solid waste disposal. Furthermore, the unchecked use of pesticides and fertilizers in agriculture has led to the contamination of water sources.
